Perhaps the easiest way to grab my attention is show me an old piece of farming equipment. I am constantly fascinated at the design and function of equipment that formed the backbone of today’s farm equipment.
Over at Farm Industry News, there’s a great photo scrapbook of some of the first farm equipment used in the United States. It’s housed at a museum on the grounds of New Holland’s headquarters in New Holland, Pa.
It’s a great walk through the past, and one way for us to certainly appreciate today’s equipment. But one also has to wonder just how much time and effort went into ensuring that this equipment remained in service. Or, how much the day’s farming practices figured into the overall design. I would imagine that having the latest farming innovation back in the day was also a measure in patience to ensure it worked correctly.
So what’s the oldest piece of equipment still in use on your farm? And to what do you attribute its longevity?
