Looking at the longer-range weather forecasts, it looks as if my already stressed home air conditioning unit will get another good workout, as will my electricity bill.

If there’s one thing we take for granted when we flip the switch, it’s an air conditioning unit. They’re actually quite amazing things…able to sit idly by and bring us much-needed relief at a moment’s notice. And depending on where you live, they are either used a few weeks out of the year, or a few months.

But ask anyone who has had to wait for service and suffer though sweltering nights, and they’ll be the first to tell you that these things can break down at the most inopportune times. Often, this occurs when everyone ELSE is taxing their units and also needing that emergency service repair. It can be a frustrating, and costly phone call.

After dealing with an untimely breakdown myself, I have on my calendar for a yearly call to my heating/air conditioning technician. While that’s no guarantee that something won’t go wrong, he’s often able to catch the little things (like a fan that was showing its age) before they become major. It’s money and time well invested.

Isn’t some of your equipment just like that? It’s used only a few times, but when you hook it up, or turn the key, you expect it to work. But remember, it’s been sitting idle for who knows how long, and problems can creep up. That’s why regular service can pay big dividends in the long run.

So, do you have a regular maintenance plan for your seasonal equipment?
